Klaas' first day at Jimmy's No 43!

Tuesday, Klaas met me at Jimmy's No 43 for a day of work. As the bar owner, my day is varied. No two days are alike. Most often, the afternoons are spent in meetings -with the bookkeeper, beer salesmen; emailing; and general business errands.

Klaas met me in the afternoon, one of the Amsterdam local tv stations visited, and we spent most of our time posing and goofing around for the video camera! Like a good colleague, I gave Klaas a tour of the bar. He changed a few kegs in the kegroom, met the cooks and other staff. Later that night, I took Klaas to one of my favorite beer bars in Brooklyn, Spuyten Duyvil, in Williamsburg. We drove across the Williamsburg Bridge in a car service.

Many New Yorkers assume Amsterdam is all about hash and hookers. In fact, it's one reason I never visited Amsterdam in my youth! The car service driver (a private taxi) did not hesitate, and asked Klaas many questions about the red light district! I insist that I am only interested in the culture and history of Amsterdam.

Klaas said he had spent the day riding his bicycle around the city. I have a few events planned this week. Thursday night, I am hosting a special NYC-Amsterdam slow food oyster party. Friday and Saturday, Jimmy's No 43 will have 20 casks of ale in the back room. The cask fest will kickoff the nyc craft beer week. Klaas will be working at these events.
