Last Saturday all Job Swappers met for the last time in the Public Libray of Amsterdam, where Job Swapper Leo Willemse works. With the minister for European Affairs Frans Timmermans the Job Swappers retrospected their experiences of the last two weeks,
At the first meeting in New York the Job Swap couples felt instantly connected through a shared passion for their profession. Sometimes the differences were evidently big, but at other times it became apparent how universal a job can be.
There were interesting, inspiring and moving moments at te meeting last Saturday. Rochelle (the midwife from New York) learned from this experience that she wants to take more time for her patients, instead of the monitors around them. Her Job Swap colleague Ilona is inspired by the extensive care for women in New York in their entire fertile phase and wants to implement this in the Birth center in Amsterdam.
Hille Hoogland (Food bank Amsterdam) and Kristen Mancinelli (City Harvest New York) connected through their motivation to increase access to affordable nutritious food in low-income communities and to develop programs that cover more than the distribution of food, such as budget trainings. Kristen: "I have a renewed motivation for my work and a deeper understanding of the possibilities for bettering the world."
For Patrick Nugter (firefighter in Amsterdam), the 9/11 memorial he attended with his colleagues from New York, John and Stephen, left a big impression.
The Job Swap has some tangible results. Ivo de Bode (farmer at Texel) and Andrew Raymond and Bennett Konesni (farmers at Shelter Island) will produce Texels sheep cheese at Shelter Island. And jazz singer Renske Taminiau from Amsterdam and singer songwriter Leah Siegel from New York wrote and recorded a song together. The song will be available to down-load at the Job Swap website very soon!
Maybe the Job Swap is over, but the impressions and influences will last.
